Federal MPs have been warned to expect pre-Christmas protests at their electorate offices by environmentalists calling for greater action on climate change.
Campaigners will come armed with instructions on how to stage the perfect sit-in.
The Attorney-General’s Department’s protective security coordination centre has warned the Federal Parliament of ”a concerted action campaign in December”, with climate change protesters targeting federal electorate offices and possibly Parliament House.
The ”Step In To Step It Up” climate change campaign was developed by environmentalists at a forum in Sydney last month.
Friends of the Earth spokeswoman Holly Creenaune said the campaign was a response to ”weak and defeatist” carbon reduction targets likely to be adopted by the Federal Labor Government when it released its white paper on greenhouse gas reductions and emissions trading next month.
”The Rudd Government got elected in the first climate change election, but should expect a backlash across Australia if their targets are extremely limited and the Government hands out free permits to polluters,” Ms Creenaune said.
